| Spearheaded by faculty from the Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW) during 2004 and 2005, an international team of social work clinicians and educators developed a Train the Trainers workshop in Social Work Practice to be implemented at the newly-established Social Work Training Center at Demeu Family Care Center in Astana, Kazakhstan. The staged approach included a needs assessment, the development of a curriculum and training manual, a week-long training workshop at Demeu, and a follow up meeting for a subgroup of trainees at CUSSW. CUSSW faculty worked in consultation with Volunteer Services Organization, Social Workers on site in Kazakhstan, and Demeu staff to prepare a training founded on theoretical and clinical principles of direct social work practice. Funded by the American International Health Alliance (AIHA) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the goal was to develop a culturally appropriate curriculum that could be replicated by Demeu staff and eventually in replication sites across Kazakhstan. The curriculum content focused on the knowledge and information that could be used to promote a model for a comprehensive network of social services for the people of Kazakhstan. This training manual provides an overview and introduction to the scope of professional social work theory and principles for work with individuals, families, groups and communities. The training manual is intended as an introduction to the profession of social work practice for: persons (social workers) already working in primary care settings; healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses) and policy makers; and volunteers. 221 pp. | |
