Nursing association leaders in Ukraine convened at a workshop to promote the expansion of the All-Ukrainian Nursing Association (AUNA), address nursing leadership development, and make decisions about the Association's organizational structure and relationship to other regional and specialty associations. Participants decided to form a Federation Advisory Board—with its members representing each of the associations—to act as an advisor to the AUNA, which will be structured on a federation model. Future plans for the AUNA include its role as a liaison between the Ministry of Health and Ukrainian nursing associations and as a countrywide specialist for writing nursing standards and guidelines. The AUNA will also promote collaboration of common concerns among all nursing associations in Ukraine.

The AIHA-sponsored conference, held August 28-30 in Kiev, began with an overview of AIHA's nursing program and presentations by Tatiana Chernyshenko, chief nurse at the Ministry of Health in Ukraine; Tatiana Fedik, president of the Ukrainian Psychiatric Nurses Association; Galina Ivashko, president of the All-Ukrainian Nursing Association; and Tatiana Shudra, president of the Kiev Nursing Association.

The conference also featured breakout sessions led by Galina Kulagina, president of the Belarus Nurses Association; Olga Pozdniakova, president of the Operating Sisters Association in Moscow; and Valentina Sarkisova, president of the All-Russian Nurses Association, who were the NIS faculty for the workshop. The sessions highlighted AUNA's membership and its relationship with regional and specialty associations. Additional sessions offered grant writing and skill-building exercises in program planning and budget planning, and management complexities.

The workshop concluded with plans for a future workshop that will teach leadership, team-building, and communication skills as well as train nurse leaders in grassroots strategies.
