Nursing Resource Centers Module

Evaluating Your NRC

It is critical to evaluate your NRC on an ongoing basis, both to provide information that will help you improve your center and to help ensure that those providing your funding better understand how the center is functioning. In addition, you will have measurable data you can use to help strengthen the center, particularly when it comes to obtaining additional funding and resources.

How often you evaluate—and how thorough each evaluation is—will depend on your individual institution and circumstances. As an example, AIHA NRCs provide monthly reports and this approach has worked well over the years.

Nursing Center Monthly Report
The Nursing Center Monthly Report is a valuable tool designed in conjunction with AIHA’s NRC partners. You can begin using this report immediately. It does not require any significant commitment of time, yet it helps keep you on track by giving you a way to measure progress and setbacks over time and provide you with the solid data you need to move forward.

NRC Assessment Survey
This survey, which was developed jointly by AIHA’s monitoring and evaluation and nursing program staff, is one component of a three-part assessment tool. Other components include an NRC User Survey and the NRC Supply Checklist.

The NRC Assessment Survey includes 12 sections that will help you gain a better understanding of your NRC, how it is succeeding, and where improvements could be made. The sections include: overall status, staffing, structure and leadership; main activities and services offered; profile of users; statistics about usage; sources of funding; available resources; external collaboration/communication; main factors for success; main obstacles to success; and recommendations.

NRC User Survey
This survey, which was developed jointly by AIHA’s monitoring and evaluation and nursing program staff, is another component of the three-part assessment tool. Other components include an NRC Assessment Survey and the NRC Supply Checklist.

The NRC User Survey consists of 10 questions that have been designed to identify center visitors, the purpose of their visits, and opinions about centers activities. Print out and distribute this survey to NRC visitors when they arrive at your center.

NRC Supply Checklist
The supply checklist is a compilation of books, media resources, equipment, and other supplies used by AIHA-affiliated NRCs. Most new NRCs will contain resources that are unique to their institution, country, and specific needs. Recognizing that funds may limit what you can purchase, AIHA recommends you work toward obtaining the items on this list and using it as a guide as you work to build your NRC.
