AIHA’s Primary Healthcare Program in Armenia began in 1999 and led to the creation of eight partnerships designed to improve the scope and accessibility of high-quality primary care services and patient education and outreach programs. While some of these partnerships focused on improving and expanding care at existing polyclinics, others worked together to establish new Primary Healthcare or Family Medicine Centers.

These partnerships include:

  • Armavir/Galveston, Texas
  • Gegarkunik/Providence, Rhode Island
  • Lori/Los Angeles, California
  • Lori/Milwaukee, Wisconsin
  • Yerevan/Washington, DC
The Lori/Los Angeles partners at Vanadzor Polyclinic No. 5 began seeing their first primary care patients in 2000 and the model Primary Healthcare Center at the facility officially opened its doors in 2002. The partnership’s reach into the Lori community is widespread and has had an impact on the health of more than 10,000 people. In 2003, renovations were completed on replication sites in the regional communities of Alaverdi, Dashir, Spitak, and Stepanavan; these locations also adopted primary care methods and began utilizing guidelines developed at Polyclinic No. 5.

In 2003, when their partnership with Los Angeles was nearing completion, the Lori partners joined forces with Milwaukee-based Center for International Health to expand training opportunities for primary care professionals in Lori and other districts in Armenia, particularly rural areas of the country. Partners opened the Lori Health Training Center at Vanadzor Polyclinic No. 5 in October 2003 to provide skills-based training to physician-nurse teams.
