Georgia
AIHA launched its Primary Healthcare Program in Georgia in 1999. Since then, four partnerships have been established with the objective of improving primary healthcare services and delivery in their host communities. As a result, three Primary Healthcare Centers and one Women’s Wellness Center were opened.
Gori
A partnership between Gori, Georgia, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was established with the overall goal to improve the health of individuals in the Shida Kartli region by facilitating access to high quality primary healthcare in ambulatory health centers.
The process determined to meet this goal began with the establishment of a family medicine training and demonstration center (FMTDC) in the Gori Central District Polyclinic to improve capacity of targeted ambulatories. Additionally, health delivery was strengthened by developing core teams of family medicine physicians and primary care nurse trainers; access was improved to PHC Center services as well by establishing village health posts.
Guria
A partnership between Guria, Georgia, and La Crosse, Wisconsin, was established with the overall goal to establish a replicable and sustainable Primary Healthcare Center in the Guria Region. Partners opened a model Primary Healthcare and Regional Training Center at the Ozurgeti District Polyclinic in October 2005. In support of the Georgian government’s national health reform plans, this Center offers a wide and comprehensive range of community-based primary care and prevention services, while at the same time providing training—and in some cases re-training—to medical professionals throughout the region. Center staff conduct many successful health promotion efforts, including community health fairs and an innovative hypertension screening program.
Mtskheta-Mtianeti
A partnership linking the Mtskheta-Mtianeti Regional Health Administration with the Milwaukee-based Center for International Health was established in 1999 with the overall goal to design, develop, and implement a family and community-oriented primary healthcare system in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of Georgia. Partners opened the Mtskheta Primary Healthcare Center in February 2001. This model primary care center was expanded to include training services in October 2003 and renamed the Mtskheta Family Medicine and Regional Training Center. In addition to providing an extensive range of primary care and outreach services to people of all ages, the center also services as a training and demonstration site for physicians, nurses, and other healthcare personnel throughout the region.
