New Chisinau Family Medicine Center Houses Teaching and Assessment Center (AIHA Connections, May 2003)
AIHA's primary healthcare program in Moldova began in 2000 with the creation of a partnership that linked Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Chisinau with Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk. This single partnership led to the establishment of two Primary Healthcare Centers in the Moldovan capital of Chisinau. In addition to expanding community-based primary healthcare services, the partnership also focused on building long-term capacity in the country by developing a clinical training center at one of the facilities and establishing residency programs in family medicine at both centers.

Partners opened the first model Primary Healthcare Center in Chisinau’s Botanica District in June 2001. Fully equipped and staffed by physicians and nurses who received extensive clinical training in family medicine, the Pro San Family Medicine Center offers primary healthcare services, patient education and outreach, and a wide range of health promotion and disease prevention programs to a population of approximately 12,500 people.

They opened the second model Primary Healthcare Center in April 2003 on the campus of Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Chisinau’s Buiucano District. Like the first clinic, this center is fully equipped and staffed by well-trained physicians and nurses. It offers an extensive range of clinical and educational primary care services to a population of 12,000. This center also houses the Clinical Skills Training and Assessment Center to provide both retraining of working medical professionals and hands-on clinical practice for residents and medical students attending Nicolae Testemitanu State University. In addition, this center is home to a Computer Skills Laboratory established by partners to improve access to medical databases and other electronic resources. US partners donated more than 50 computers and servers for this lab and Nicolae Testemitanu State University contributed the funds necessary for its completion.
