Description: |
Project HOPE, The People-to-People Health Foundation, Inc., is an independent, non-profit organization founded in 1958, based in Millwood, VA. Its mission is to achieve sustainable advances in health and health care around the world by implementing health education programs and providing humanitarian assistance in areas of need. Project HOPE has conducted health programs in 80 countries and currently operates in 28 nations. Project HOPE focuses on 5 major areas of activity: the Health of Women and Children, Infectious Diseases, Health Systems and Facilities Development, Professional Health Education, and Humanitarian Assistance. Village health banking (VHB), integrating health education and micro-credit support, cuts across these focus areas in 8 countries. Project HOPE began its tuberculosis activities in Kazakhstan in 1994 and currently conducts the single largest and most comprehensive regional tuberculosis program in the Central Asian Republics (CAR), with USAID funded programs in each of the five countries in CAR, and collaborates with the Ministries of Health (MoH) in each of the CAR on their NTPs. The USAID-funded Project HOPE Consortium (HC), known in the region as the Central Asian TB Control Partnership, is implementing activities to improve political support, increase human and systems capacity, and engage in community advocacy and mobilization for TB control and prevention with an emphasis on the WHO-recommended DOTS strategy. The HC program works directly with the national tuberculosis program in each country, providing monitoring and quality assurance assistance as well as valuable trainings to managers, TB specialists, laboratory specialists, primary health care physicians, and nurses involved in TB control. The HC also provides context-specific technical assistance under each of its program objectives in areas including policy analysis and support; facilitating stakeholder coordination and communication through forums such as thematic working groups; facilitating the integration of TB control within reformed health systems where appropriate; working toward the creation of a rational drug management system; strengthening the laboratory network; and conducting IEC/BCC activities aimed at patients and providers. The program also works specifically on MDR-TB and TB/HIV co-infection issues, and work on TB prisons is underway in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan In addition to working with USAID support, Project HOPE is also assisting to implement the Global Fund TB grants in the region. In Tajikistan, Project HOPE is the Principle Recipient of the GFATM grant and in Uzbekistan Project HOPE is a sub-recipient of GFATM funds. |
